Set links to files outside the Q.wiki

Modified on Thu, 2 Apr at 4:19 PM

Since Q.wiki 6.7, links to files on local disks or network drives are technically supported. However, for security reasons, most browsers block these file links by default.

Important: We advise against using file links. If you still want to enable them, your IT department must configure browser policies and add Q.wiki to the trusted zones.
Caution: Browser configuration is outside the scope of Q.wiki support. We cannot provide support for browser-related issues or guarantee their functionality.

Alternative: Use online storage

You can store documents in Microsoft OneDrive or other cloud storage services and link to them from Q.wiki. This is the recommended approach, especially for documents that are regularly updated.

Firefox

Configuration via Intune

  1. Download the policies: Releases · mozilla/policy-templates (github.com) (external)
  2. Import the policies into Intune. For more information, see Import custom administrative templates in Microsoft Intune (external)
  3. Create a new configuration policy of type Administrative Template
  4. Navigate to Mozilla > Firefox > Local File Links, enable the policy, and enter the appropriate domain

Configuration for managed Windows computers (on-premise)

  1. Download the Group Policy Template: mozilla.github.io/policy-templates (external)
  2. Import the template into Active Directory
  3. Open the Group Policy Manager and configure the URL under the following registry paths:
    • Software\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\LocalFileLinks\1 = "https://example.org"
    • Software\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\LocalFileLinks\2 = "https://example.edu"

Microsoft Edge

You can enable file links through appropriate browser policies. See the Microsoft Edge Browser Policy Documentation (external) for details.

Chrome

Currently, we are only aware of configuration via a browser extension. Contact your IT department for more information.

Creating file links in Q.wiki

You can create links as type URL using the schema file:///X:/path/to/file.docx.
